“March 13, 2020 was the last day I had a classroom full of students. It was a Friday, high five Friday, and when they left my room, smiles wide both in excitement of the day and the promise of a good weekend, I had no idea they wouldn’t be coming back.

Today, coming up on a year later, my students from last year have moved on to high school, and my new students are resilient. They come to school in small cohorts or attend remotely, they wear their masks and social distance, they still read, they still write, they still discuss, but despite all of our efforts and hope for a sense of normalcy, things are not the same, and I won’t leave today having seen their smiles.

But we have a SOLUTION in our midst. I am going to get the COVID vaccine not only because it is the right thing to do to stop COVID-19, but because the vaccine puts us one step closer to classrooms full of life, laughter, and ear to ear smiles again.”
